D is for Deficient

This is the tale of a sunbeam that landed upon the arm of a gardener while he was out pruning his roses. The gardener was working hard in the afternoon sun, and barely noticed that the sunbeam had not only landed upon his arm, but that his skin - that miraculous organ of receiving and filtering- had absorbed the sunbeam in the way the spring soil he was tending did: like a thirsty child.

Out of this transformational meeting, something quite impressive was born. This quite impressive element then entered the gardener’s bloodstream, where it was carried to his liver. There it met other similarly impressive elements that had traveled not from the sun directly, but from certain foods and supplements digesting in the gardener’s gut.

Once in the liver, another transformation took place and all of the impressive elements changed their name to Calcidiol, or more specifically, 25(OH)D. The liver then sent the impressive 25(OH)D back out into the bloodstream, where it circulated to other tissues and organs.

The kidney in particular, scooped up this impressive 25(OH)D and another transformation took place in which the Cacidiol became activated. Now known as vitamin D3 - or its more fancy hormone name, Calcitriol - it went on to perform a number of very impressive tasks, including:

  • Managing the calcium and phosphorus levels through out the body, and…
  • Increasing and supporting communication at the cellular level throughout the body.

Scientists are just now discovering that vitamin D3 may very well be the body’s Master Vitamin, and act like the electricity in our homes. If the current is weak, the lamps and appliances - our health and wellbeing - may flicker or falter. In fact, according to research from Colorado State University:

“It turns out that vitamin D receptors are present in most if not all cells in the body. Additionally, experiments using cultured cells have demonstrated that vitamin D has potent effects on the growth and differentiation of many types of cells. These findings suggest that vitamin D has physiologic effects much broader than a role in mineral homeostasis and bone function. As one example, many immune cells not only express vitamin D receptors, but are capable of synthesizing active vitamin D, and deficiency in vitamin D has been associated with increased incidence of autoimmune disease and susceptibility to disease.”[1]

 

 

Here is where the tale of the sunbeam becomes a serious, grown-up issue. From the International Journal of Health Science:

“Vitamin D3 deficiency can result in obesity, diabetes, hypertension, depression, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, osteoporosis and neuro-degenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin D deficiency may even contribute to the development of cancers, especially breast, prostate, and colon cancers. Current research indicates vitamin D deficiency plays a role in causing seventeen varieties of different cancers as well as heart disease, stroke, autoimmune diseases, birth defects, and periodontal disease. Vitamin D3 is believed to play a role in controlling the immune system (possibly reducing one’s risk of cancers and autoimmune diseases), increasing neuromuscular function and improving mood, protecting the brain against toxic chemicals, and potentially reducing pain.”[2]

In addition, there is more not-so-sunny news:

According to Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders,a significant proportion of the world’s population is currently vitamin d deficient.[3] Currently this deficiency affects more than a billion people worldwide, including children.[4] Widespread studies have confirmed these figures, and have been done across the globe in many countries, including the US and Canada, South America, Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and India. In fact, in India, a near universal vitamin d deficiency is present among a diverse population, even though many spend their days outside in the hot sun.[5]

Given the scope of the issue and the fact that a number of these countries are along the equator and are generally known to be hot, sunny climates, it becomes particularly disturbing that so many people are deficient.

What could be causing this?

There is research indicating that various bacteria can impair the vitamin D receptor site in the cells,[6] such as Borrelia burgdorferi, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium leprase, or Chlamydia trachomatis, among others. In addition, viruses and fungi have also been found to have the same deleterous effect, and include Epstein-Barr, HIV, and Hepatitis C, among others. If the cell receptor site is impaired for whatever reason, it won’t matter how much vitamin D is floating around in your bloodstream; if the receptor site is closed, the nutrition will not be able to be delivered into the cell where it is needed.

In this fast-paced world, with our food supply is being profoundly altered by chemicalization and other means, and where we are close to having no antibiotics left due to the spectacular survivability in microbial, bacterial, and viral populations… the question must be asked:

Are humans losing the ability to harness the sun’s energy?

Has our collective bioavailability become so poor that even fortified foods and supplementation cannot help?

 

 

At the moment, science has no answer as to why such a huge portion of the world’s population is vitamin D deficient, with those numbers climbing every year.

Thankfully, there is new hope on the horizon, and while it is scientifically validated, it doesn’t originate from either the scientific or research community.
