There is a lot of approval these days for positive thinking. Specifically, when we want more out of life – whether it is a bigger house, the perfect lover, a better job, glowing health – all too often the temptation is right there in the headlines: Affirmations! Positive thinking! All you have to do is think it and it will come to you!
Probably everyone in our western culture has seen the movie “The Secret,” which claims that mental and emotional affirmations really work, and that all we need to do is think positively in order to manifest what we desire in life. One scroll through Amazon’s books on positive thinking will demonstrate exactly this belief that if we can only think bright enough thoughts for long enough, our whole life will change.
Think it! Become it! Manifest it!
The answer to all of Life’s struggles encapsulated in a three-step process.
It can sound enticing, can’t it? Especially when we are struggling, vulnerable, and searching for answers, for hope, for a lifeline out of the desperate circumstances life can sometimes serve. As a marketing strategy for selling books, it’s brilliant, however when it comes to the reality of everyday life, it misses the mark in a wide and inverted way.
Because the underlying belief is that thoughts are generated in the mind, and that we are in control of that. Because the underlying belief is that we are the captain of our own destiny, the God of our own world. Because the underlying belief is that all of nature’s governing laws should turn on their axis so that we can be fulfilled, regardless of the consequences to others. Because the underlying belief is that magical thinking works.
None of these beliefs are based in reality, and as such, every one of them is delusion. And the result of chasing delusion? The wasting of our resources; time, money, life force energy.
In truth, the mind is a filter, not a generator. Energies are sent to us from our Source, and – like various bandwidths along the color spectrum – according to our level of consciousness, our mind will filter these energies and become our perceptions, our thoughts, and our beliefs. A more helpful way to evaluate our thoughts is to observe which are useful and which are useless. Useful thoughts lead to positive, tangible outcomes in life, whereas useless thoughts are exactly that. The only valuable thought is one that leads to a good outcome for ourselves or humanity. All else is essentially garbage.
When we are at a higher level of consciosuness, we will naturally harness useful thoughts and be endowed with the Life Force Energy to implement these ideas for the benefit of all. And as much as we might wish otherwise, we are not in control of how or when our consciousness rises. We simply cannot back-engineer it or manipulate it. Further, any time we try to back-engineer an outcome for personal gain, that is, we try to “get rich quick” by side-stepping what it actually takes to create wealth, we disconnect ourselves from the flow of Grace which can bring that wealth.
For consciousness to rise, the Grace and Will of God is necessary. Purity is necessary. Honesty, courage, hard work, true caring, and willingness to sacrifice are necessary. And even then, higher consciousness is bestowed upon us as a gift.
As the best gift.
As the most meaningful and profound gift we could ever receive.
